Where we want to go
The general direction of our endeavours is set out in the CoLab's Mission, Vision and Aims. We also know some of the paths we will trod in making our dreams become reality.
The Vision, Mission and Aims
The VMA give direction to all the activities, groups and projects within the CoLab. All working groups and projects are working towards achieving one or more aspects of the VMA.
We envision a healthy, peaceful and socially just world in which we care for the earth, each other and future generations, in harmony with nature.
We pledge to work together to enhance the coherence and effectiveness of local to global permaculture networks both formal and informal.
We aim to:
- provide a collaborative and convivial online space in which to work towards the Co-Lab’s vision and mission;
- identify opportunities to enhance the coherence and effectiveness of local, regional, national, continental and global permaculture networks;
- research, assess and provide information about the current state and extent of permaculture thinking and practice and its strategic context to enable effective planning, project design and network development;
- identify and mobilise resources that support participants to nurture existing initiatives and develop new eco-social enterprises, projects and initiatives that address identified challenges, or add additional value to permaculture networks;
- communicate with permaculture networks and allies to ensure wide understanding of the CoLab and active participation from around the world;
- make effective links between permaculture and allied networks that enhance our collective work towards our shared visions;
- work towards a multi-lingual platform that enables wide participation from across the worldwide permaculture community;
- work towards eliminating racism, patriarchy, the class system and any other manifestations of the oppressive society (aka the Patrix) that present major blocks to healthy and diverse participation in both the Colab and the wider permaculture network;
- provide and document existing training and learning resources to enable people to participate and work effectively together;
- use and document the process of CoLab development to actively learn and unlearn organisational development processes suited to complex multi-layered networks.
How we hope to do this
How we will go about this is the big question that the CoLab is all about; that is where most of the action is happening. In general, we are adopting some elements of the Constellation Framework and apply sociocratic principles in our working spaces.
The Co-Lab uses sociocratic principles to structure its organisation and decision making processes. Training and resources will be provided to ensure participants are able to learn about and use sociocracy effectively. This was the first policy decision of the CoLab. The CoLab uses sociocratic approaches to provide a consistent approach to decision making and group process in the working groups, stewardship group and secretariat
The working groups are where most of the work is happening. People gather in working groups on a permanent or temporary basis. They could be thematically focused (e.g How do we reduce the impacts of water mining?, How do we apply the edge principle to facilitating meetings?, etc.) or geographically focused (How to strengthen East Africa's permaculture movement, etc.).
The stewardship group and the secretariat are two elements we are implementing that are there to help the working groups flourish. The stewardship group focuses on the overall health of the CoLab and its formal relationships with others. The secretariat is populated by our lab technicians. These people focus on the formal support structures. They organise meetings, make sure training is on offer where needed, help with the administration of CoLab funds, make sure you got access to the online spaces, etc.
